xRawngx is a Bay area straight-edge hardcore punk band, led by multi- instrumentalist Eric Yih, that recently stumbled across my radar in the past couple of months. As I give their latest ep a listen, Once and for all, the skeletal foundation of classic punk/ hardcore began ringing through my ears with its textbook rhythm and definitive style. The primary sensation received as the song Let it Go began to play was a similar feeling to reconnecting with a old friend from my childhood neighborhood. xRawngx is a band that stays true to the core of the genre by seemingly paying homage to the culture and the sound to their influences, i.e., early H20, Rancid, early Agnostic Front. The Bay Area band offers a bit of an grittier edge; thicker sound, faster yet rhythmic tempo with bit of a groove from the elevated volume on the bass. xRawngx literally doesn’t skip a beat and maintains the true spirit hardcore punk ethos in its straight forward, sincere lyricism with an uncompromising attitude. The upbeat tempo that is carried throughout the album holds an abundance of catchiness, an essential aid to the short songs that earnestly get the message across. Once and for all is a rambunctious ride from start to finish. Although it tops off at roughly 20 minutes, the duration of each songs will cause you to fly through the project in no time. Be prepared to repeat.
